A performance test for a new camera,
made into
a one-day film

Normally I shoot mirrorless, working alone. Getting hold of an action camera for the first time, I wanted to know whether one small piece of kit could carry a whole film on its own. No test course was set. My own day in Bangkok became the course.

So the film follows the order of a review. An opening card declares the equipment, a day becomes the test, and a closing card writes down the result. Beside the title there is even a subtitle: nine years in Bangkok.

Title card. Under Daily Life In Bangkok, the subtitle 9 year-old-legal alien

Declaration two, one piece of kit

The day begins in the dark,
with three alarms

Half past five in the morning, three alarms pushed back two minutes at a time open the day. This opening, starting with the screen still dark, comes back later as a footnote to the final verdict. At the gym a question mark lands on a two and a half kilo plate, and past the charcoal skewers and the canal boat and Siam, all the way to a blank face in a barbershop mirror, subtitles and graphics keep up a running commentary.

The ninth year, and a Thai textbook in the bag

The camera went
where a mirrorless
body cannot go

Small and good in water, it takes up a place in the household instead of on a tripod. On a chest doing bench press, inside a takeaway bag, inside the oven warming a lunchbox, inside a kettle taking water, over a pan mid stir-fry, in front of a running shower. By the end of the day those six places are the test items themselves.
